Digital TV Research has revised its forecast upwards due to the pandemic, now predicting there will be 1.161 billion subscription VoD accounts by 2025, which is up by 81% from 2019 and putting it on a par with the current payTV total.
Of the 519 million new global SVOD subscriptions between 2019 and 2025, 170 million will come in 2020 alone, in large part thanks to the ongoing Covid pandemic.
Disney+, which just announced a September launch date in Belgium, will be the biggest winner by adding 176 million subscribers in the period to take its total to 202 million, according to the new figures. Netflix will add 91 million subscribers.
Five global platforms, also including Amazon, Apple TV+ and HBO, will have 640 million paying SVOD subscribers by 2025.
China’s domestic players will account for 23% of the global total by 2025 and no foreign players are expected to enter the country.
Simon Murray, Principal Analyst at Digital TV Research, said: “We have completely revised our forecasts for 138 countries in the wake of the Covid 19 pandemic. A major impact of lockdown has been a steep rise in SVOD subscriptions.”
